We need to make sure that our schools are as safe as possible without making our children feel threatened or alarmed. Over the last 15 years, gun violence in schools has become far too common. Our lawmakers haven’t done nearly enough to enact measures that can minimize the chances of another shooting happening.
Schools are designed to be places of joy, learning, life and exploration. Sadly, our kids have become adept at listening for code words and quickly identifying safe places for cover during lockdown drills. Until the lives of our children are seen as a higher priority and commonsense gun laws are enacted, active shooter and lockdown drills will continue to be a part of our children’s school experience.
I am opposed to arming teachers and faculty. I don’t believe that concealed weapons should be on school grounds. Our teachers and staff need to be focused on ensuring that our children are in a nurturing environment that stimulates learning.
Additionally, I’m opposed to School Resource Officers on our campuses. School safety is a priority. The vision of armed law enforcement officials roaming our halls and playgrounds removes the innocence from the school environment.
If elected to the Encinitas Union School Board, I will keep school safety and gun violence prevention in the discussion. I believe that providing a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty and volunteers is of the utmost importance.
